Etymology
Miel comes from Latin agnellus, a diminutive of agnus, 'lamb'. Romanian is one of the few Romance languages where Latin gn regularly became mn, as in lemn from lignum ('wood') and somn from somnus ('sleep'); the same shift, followed by further sound changes, turned agnellus into the modern form miel. The word has stayed close to its original meaning for a thousand years.
