Etymology

Labă is a Slavic loanword, related to Bulgarian лапа (lapa) and Russian лапа (lapa), both meaning paw. It entered Romanian through long contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors, joining a large layer of everyday Slavic vocabulary in the language. The word originally named the flat underside of an animal's foot and then widened to cover the whole paw.
