Îmbolnăvi is built inside Romanian from the adjective bolnav, meaning sick, which Romanian borrowed from a Slavic source (compare Old Church Slavonic bolĭnŭ). The prefix îm- (a nasal-assimilated form of în-, from Latin in-) adds the sense of entering a state, and the ending -i marks a fourth-conjugation infinitive.
