Mariaj entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as a borrowing from French mariage, part of a large wave of French vocabulary that reshaped Romanian during its modern development. French mariage comes from the verb marier, to marry, which traces to Latin maritare, built on maritus, husband. Romanian already had a native word for marriage, căsătorie, so mariaj settled in as a more literary or formal alternative rather than filling a real gap.
