Etymology

Romanian borrowed "tribunal" from French "tribunal" in the 19th century, as part of a wave of French legal and administrative vocabulary. The French word descends from Latin "tribunal", a raised platform where a magistrate sat to hear cases. That noun in turn comes from "tribunus", the Roman official (tribune) entitled to use such a platform.
