Etymology
Următor is a native Romanian formation, built from the verb a urma, "to follow," plus the agentive suffix -tor. The root urmă, meaning "track" or "footprint," has a disputed origin: some scholars treat it as inherited from Latin, others as a survival from a pre-Roman substrate language. The suffix -tor, by contrast, is clearly Latin, the same element that produced words like actor and doctor. Put together, următor literally means something like "the one that follows," hence "next."
