Etymology

Agita comes from French agiter, which in turn comes from Latin agitare, the frequentative form of agere, meaning to drive or to do. Romanian absorbed the word during the nineteenth-century push to re-Latinize its vocabulary through French borrowings. The Latin source already carried both senses the Romanian word keeps today: physical shaking and emotional unrest.
