Etymology

Frumusețe is a Romanian-internal formation. It takes the adjective frumos, meaning beautiful, and adds the abstract-noun suffix -ețe, which turns qualities into nouns, as in tânăr to tinerețe (youth) or bătrân to bătrânețe (old age). Frumos itself descends from Latin formosus, shapely or beautiful. The deeper origin of Latin forma is debated among specialists, so no single Proto-Indo-European root can be stated with confidence.
