Etymology

Serv comes from Latin servus, meaning slave or bondsman. Etymologists traditionally link servus to the verb servare, to keep or preserve, on the theory that a servus was originally a war captive spared rather than killed. Romanian borrowed the word directly from Latin as part of its inherited vocabulary, keeping the core meaning of an unfree or subordinate worker. The word survives today mainly in literary and historical Romanian rather than daily speech.
