Etymology
Romanian "vitreg" is not inherited from Latin. Romanian dictionaries trace it to an Old Slavic source, reflecting centuries of contact between Romanian and neighboring Slavic languages. The word entered Romanian carrying the sense of a family bond formed through remarriage rather than blood, and it later widened to describe any circumstance that is harsh or unfavorable, by analogy with the stock image of a hard stepparent.
