أَقْرَب is the elative form, on the pattern أَفْعَل, of the triliteral root q-r-b, which carries the sense of being near. The same root yields قَرِيب (near) and اقْتَرَبَ (to draw near). It belongs to the common Semitic stock for nearness, with clear parallels across Hebrew, Aramaic, and Akkadian.
