Etymology
أماه is the causative, form-IV verb built on the root م-و-ه, the same root that classical grammarians see behind the ordinary word for water, ماء. In its plain form the root gives verbs meaning 'to hold or yield water'; the أ- prefix turns that into 'to cause water to appear or to add water.' The middle radical و surfaces as ا in this pattern, which is why the verb looks like أماه rather than أموه.
