شَجَرَةtree (same root, unrelated modern sense)Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral root ش-ج-ر (sh-j-r), whose basic sense in Arabic covers both trees and tangled, complicated states. Classical lexicons describe the plain verb شَجَرَ as meaning branches or matters became intricate and confused with one another, and from that image of entanglement Arabic derived the noun شِجار (a quarrel) and the verb شاجَرَ (to dispute with someone). تَشاجَرَ is the Form VI (تَفاعَلَ) reciprocal derivation of that root, so it names the mutual, back-and-forth version of the dispute: two or more parties tangling with each other.
