Etymology

Thawr comes from the triliteral Semitic root th-w-r, the same root behind the verb thāra, to rise up or stir, and the noun thawra, revolution. Classical Arabic lexicographers tied the bull's name to this root, pointing to the animal's role in plowing, an act of turning and stirring the soil. The word has close matches across the Semitic languages for ox or bull, pointing back to a shared Proto-Semitic ancestor. It is attested already in pre-Islamic Arabic poetry as a common term for the animal.
