Etymology

شِجار is the verbal noun of the Form III verb شاجَرَ, meaning to quarrel with someone. Both trace back to the root ش-ج-ر, whose base sense is entanglement, the same root that gives شجرة, tree, from the tangled interlocking of branches. The word for a dispute grew out of that image of things crossing and knotting together, not of any outside language. It is a native Arabic development, not a borrowing.
