Etymology

Qināʿ comes from the Arabic root q-n-ʕ, whose core sense is covering or lowering the head or face. Classical lexicographers group it with qanaʿa, to bow the head, and later with qanāʿa, contentment, treating the physical covering as the older, concrete meaning. The word has no Indo-European origin, since Arabic belongs to the Semitic family.
