Etymology
Tuffāḥ is an old Semitic word for apple, shared in similar form across the family. Hebrew has tapuach and Aramaic has tapūḥā, pointing to a common ancestor term rather than a borrowing from Arabic alone. Some Arab lexicographers link the word to the root faḥa, meaning to give off a strong scent, since apples were prized for their fragrance in classical texts, though this connection is traditional rather than firmly proven. Because it is a Semitic word, it has no Indo-European root.
