Etymology
أَيِسَ comes from the triliteral Semitic root ء-ي-س, a metathesized variant of the more common root ي-أ-س that gives يَئِسَ, both meaning to despair. Classical lexicographers such as those behind Lisan al-Arab list the two forms side by side as dialectal variants of the same verb. The root itself is native Semitic vocabulary with no link to Indo-European languages.
