Etymology

إِلَى is an inherited Semitic preposition expressing direction and end-point ('to, toward, up to'). It is not derived from a triliteral verbal root but is a primitive particle reconstructable to Proto-Semitic. Its final long vowel is written with alif maqṣūra (ى) and surfaces as -ay- when a pronominal suffix is attached (e.g. إِلَيْهِ 'to him').
