Infāq comes from the Semitic root n-f-q, whose basic sense is something leaving or going out. In Form IV, anfaqa, the root takes on the meaning to spend, and infāq is the verbal noun of that form, naming the act itself. The same root shows up in Aramaic and Hebrew with the literal sense of going out, which suggests the Arabic meaning narrowed to money or resources leaving one's possession.
