Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic root ح-ض-ر (ḥ-ḍ-r), which carries the core sense of being present or in attendance. The Form III verb حاضَرَ (ḥāḍara) means to lecture, literally to engage an audience in person. مُحاضَرَة is the verbal noun (maṣdar) of that verb, so it names the act itself: a session where a speaker is present before listeners. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Indo-European root.
