Etymology
بات comes from the Semitic root ب-ي-ت, the same root behind بيت, house. A house was originally just the place where one spends the night, so the verb meant simply to pass the night somewhere. Over time, Arabic grammarians grouped بات with كان and its sisters, copula-like verbs that link a subject to a state. In that role it shifted from a literal night verb to an abstract one meaning to become or to turn out to be, a sense now common in news writing.
