Etymology
إيذاء is the verbal noun of the Form IV verb آذى, built on the triliteral root أ-ذ-ي, which carries the core sense of harm or hurt. Because the final root letter is the weak ي, the expected pattern إفعال contracts to إيذاء, the same shift seen in إعطاء (giving) and إلقاء (throwing). The word names the act itself: not the harm suffered, but the doing of it. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Indo-European ancestor.
