Etymology

The root ب-ر-ك (b-r-k) runs through the Semitic languages and ties physical kneeling to the idea of receiving favor. Hebrew shows the same pattern: בֵּרֶךְ means knee, and בְּרָכָה means blessing, since one knelt to receive or give a blessing. Arabic keeps both branches: بَرَكَ means the camel knelt, and بَرَكَة means the blessing or abundance that settles on a person or place. The same root also gives بِرْكَة, a pool, a place where water comes to rest.
