Etymology
تَجَسُّس comes from the triliteral Semitic root ج-س-س (j-s-s), whose base verb جَسَّ means to feel or touch something in order to examine it. The Form V pattern تَفَعُّل adds a reflexive, intensive sense, so تَجَسُّس literally means making oneself feel around, and by extension, prying into things secretly. The word appears in the Quran (49:12), where believers are told not to spy on one another, which cemented its moral weight in Arabic.
