Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root n-t-j, which in its base form describes an animal giving birth or yielding offspring. Arabic extended this root with the causative Form IV pattern to mean bringing something into existence more broadly, including goods, results, or data. The word is standard in Modern Standard Arabic and central to economic and scientific vocabulary. Since the root is Semitic rather than Indo-European, there is no established Indo-European root behind it.
