Etymology

شُعْبَة comes from the Semitic root sh-ʿ-b, which carries the idea of branching and splitting apart. The same root gives شَعْب (shaʿb), meaning 'people' or 'nation', on the logic that a people grows like a trunk that branches into tribes and clans. Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
