Etymology

تَحَمُّل is the verbal noun (masdar) of the Form V verb تَحَمَّلَ, built on the Semitic root ح-م-ل, whose core sense is carrying or loading. Form V adds a reflexive force to Form II حَمَّلَ, 'to load someone with something,' so تَحَمُّل literally names the act of taking a load upon oneself, hence 'endurance' or 'bearing.' Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Indo-European root. Its nearest known relative is the parallel Hebrew root ח-מ-ל, though that root's meaning drifted toward 'to pity' or 'to spare.'
