Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root f-w-t, whose base verb fāta means to pass by, elapse, or slip away in time. Doubling the middle radical produces the Form II verb fawwata, which turns that meaning causative: to make something pass by unused, that is, to miss it or make someone miss it. This is native Semitic morphology, not related to Indo-European word history.
