Etymology

فات comes from the triliteral Semitic root ف-و-ت (f-w-t), which carries the idea of passing by, slipping away, and being missed. The middle radical و makes this a hollow verb, so its vowel shifts across the different forms. The same root extends to ideas of gaps and difference, as in تفاوت (disparity).
