Etymology
جَبَل comes from the common Semitic root g-b-l, which carries linked senses of mountain and boundary. The same root lies behind the Phoenician town name Gebal (Byblos) and the Hebrew word for border. Arabic kept the mountain sense as the core meaning. The English place name Gibraltar comes from Arabic Jabal Tariq, meaning Tariq's mountain.
