Etymology
مائِيّ is the relative adjective formed from ماء (māʼ), the Arabic word for water. It adds the nisba suffix ـِيّ, which turns a noun into an adjective meaning 'pertaining to' that noun. The base ماء comes from a common Semitic word for water, shared across the family. Its underlying root, م-و-ه, resurfaces in the plural مياه and in verbs such as مَوّه.
