Etymology

كَيْفِيَّة comes from كَيْفَ, the Arabic word for 'how.' Arabic adds the suffix ـِيَّة to turn a base into an abstract noun, much as English adds '-ness' or '-ity.' So the word means 'how-ness': the manner or method by which something is done. It belongs to the Semitic root ك ي ف and has no Indo-European ancestry.
