Etymology

رِياضِيّ is a relational (nisba) adjective from رِياضة, 'sport, exercise.' Both go back to the Semitic root ر-و-ض, which meant to train or tame, as in breaking in a horse. The same root gives رَوْضة, 'meadow,' and the place name الرِّياض. The mathematical sense grew from the idea of رِياضة as exercise of the mind, so رِياضِيّات came to mean mathematics.
