Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root ج-د-ر. Across the family the root mostly carries the sense of walling or fencing, as in Arabic جِدار 'wall' and Hebrew gader 'fence.' In Arabic the root also developed an abstract sense of worth and fitness, the source of جَدُرَ 'to be worthy' and جَدِير 'deserving.' The link may run through the idea of something firmly set and established.
