Etymology
حَجْم is a verbal noun from the triliteral root ح-ج-م. The root carries the idea of bulk and of pressing or restraining, seen also in حِجامة, the old practice of cupping. From the sense of mass and extent came the modern meaning of size and volume. The related verb حَجَّمَ means to limit or to scale down.
