Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root س-ل-و, which carries the sense of forgetting grief or being consoled. The base verb سلا means to stop mourning or to be diverted from sorrow. Form II, سلّى, makes this causative: to console someone or take their mind off trouble, and by extension to amuse them. تَسْلِيَة is the verbal noun of that Form II verb, and its meaning has broadened over time from consolation to entertainment in general.
