Etymology
تَسْوِيَة is the verbal noun of the Form II verb سَوَّى, which means to make something even or equal. Both verb and noun come from the triliteral root س-و-ي, whose core sense is equality and levelness. Because the root's middle and final letters are weak (و and ي), the expected pattern تفعيل shifts to تفعلة, giving تسوية instead of the regular تسويّ. Over time the word narrowed from a physical sense of leveling ground to a figurative sense of leveling a dispute, hence its dominant modern meaning of settlement.
