Etymology

لَقِي comes from the Semitic root ل-ق-ي, a core Arabic root built around the idea of coming face to face with something. It is a Form I verb with a weak final radical, which is why its present and future forms end in a long ā rather than a full consonant. The root has no Indo-European ancestor, since Arabic belongs to the Afroasiatic family, not the Indo-European one.
