Da'wā comes from the Arabic root d-ʕ-w, the same root behind the verb da'ā, meaning to call, summon, or invite. The noun pattern fa'lā turns this action into an abstract feminine noun: literally, a calling out. Over time this sense of calling out narrowed to a formal call for judgment, which is why the word now means a legal claim or lawsuit.
