Etymology
Ḥajaza comes from the Semitic triliteral root ḥ-j-z, whose core sense is to bar, separate, or hold something back. Classical Arabic used it for blocking a path or restraining a person, and dictionaries still list detain and seize among its senses. Modern Standard Arabic narrowed the everyday use to reserving or booking something, since a booking holds a seat or room back from other customers. The same root names al-Ḥijāz, the region along Arabia's western coast, because a mountain range there separates the coastal plain from the interior plateau.
