Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root ص-د-ر (ṣ-d-r), which carries the core idea of the chest, the front, or the point from which something emanates. Arabic builds a Form V verb, tafaʿʿala, on this root by prefixing ta- and doubling the middle radical, a pattern that usually turns a root into a reflexive or resultative action. So tasaddara literally means to make oneself the front, and in practice it means to move into or occupy the leading position.
