Etymology

Ṭabl comes from a Semitic triliteral root ط ب ل that names the drum and the act of drumming. Some scholars view it as echoic, mimicking the low thud of a struck skin. The word spread beyond Arabic through trade and empire: Persian and Ottoman Turkish both borrowed forms of it, and it reached South Asia as the name of the tabla drum. It has no Indo-European root, since Arabic is a Semitic language.
