Etymology
The word comes from the triliteral Semitic root ن-د-و (n-d-w), whose core sense is gathering people together. The Form III verb نادى (nādā) means to call out to someone, often across a distance, and نادِ is its masculine singular imperative, "call!". The same root gives نادي, the word for a club or assembly hall, the place people are called to.
