Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root ʿ-y-n, whose core noun is عَيْن (ʿayn), meaning eye or spring. Arabic extended the sense of the eye, the organ that picks something out and fixes it in view, to mean specifying or designating. Form II عَيَّنَ (ʿayyana) means to appoint or specify, and تَعَيَّن (taʿayyana) is its Form V counterpart, meaning to become specified, appointed, or, in impersonal use, necessary.
