Etymology

سِيادَة is the verbal noun of the hollow verb سَادَ (yasūdu), meaning to rule, to prevail, or to be master. Both belong to the Semitic root س-و-د, which also gives سَيِّد (sayyid, lord or master). The word kept its old sense of lordship but in Modern Standard Arabic it is now the standard term for political sovereignty. Arabic is a Semitic language, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
