Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ط-ر-د (ṭ-r-d), which carries the sense of driving something away or expelling it. Arabic built a Form III verb, طارَد (ṭārada), on this root to mean chase or pursue, since Form III often marks an action done toward or against another party. مُطارَدة is the verbal noun of that verb, so it names the act of pursuing itself. As a Semitic root it has no Indo-European ancestor, so there is no PIE reconstruction.
