Etymology

حَلَّق comes from the triliteral root ح ل ق, which also gives حَلْقَة (ring, circle) and حَلْق (throat). Classical lexicographers link the verb to the image of a bird wheeling in a circular path high in the air, tracing a ḥalqa against the sky. Form II doubles the middle radical, which here intensifies the root sense into a full verb of motion: to circle upward, to soar. Over time the word settled into general use for any kind of flight, literal or figurative.
