Etymology
Khala'a comes from the Semitic root kh-l-ʿ, whose core sense is stripping something off or away. Classical Arabic used it for pulling off clothes, sandals, and armor, and by extension for stripping a ruler of office. The legal term khul', a wife-initiated divorce, comes from the same root: she separates herself from the marriage as one sheds a garment.
