Etymology
أَجْبَر is the causative Form IV of the triliteral root ج-ب-ر (j-b-r), whose base sense is to set a broken bone or to make something whole and strong again. The causative prefix أَ- shifts that sense to making someone act, hence to force or compel. The same root gives جَبْر (jabr, restoration or compulsion), which passed into Latin and then English as algebra, from al-jabr, the 'reunion of broken parts' in the title of al-Khwarizmi's mathematical treatise.
